Passport and visa requirements

Do I need a visa to visit Canada?

Click here to check whether or not you need a visa to visit Canada.

If I do need a visa, can I get it when I arrive?

No. Visas are not available at the border or at the airport.

How long will it take to get a visa?

It could take from 10 to 21 business days to process your visa application once it has been received. This is supposing that you have completed all the required forms correctly and does not include postage time. There are some regional differences in the documentation required and the processing time varies from office to office. To be on the safe side, allow up to six weeks for processing and postage of your visa application.

If I do need a visa, what type of visa do I need?

Delegates, presenters and exhibition visitors

If you do need a visa and you are attending the IWA World Water Congress and Exhibition in Montreal as a congress delegate, a presenter or exhibition visitor you will need a Temporary Resident – visitor (TRV) visa.

You will need to satisfy Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) that you are visiting Canada for the purpose of participating in the event, that you are in good health, do not have a criminal record, do not pose a threat to Canadas security and that you have a valid passport or travel document, plus some other requirements.

You can download the application form and other information about obtaining a TRV visa at www.cic.gc.ca.

What does it cost to apply for a visa?

Each applicant for a TRV needs to pay a $75 non-refundable application processing fee. This fee is not refunded if your application is refused since it covers the administrative costs of processing the application.

Do I also need a passport or other travel document?

Most participants will also need a valid passport or an appropriate travel document to enter Canada. The exceptions to this are:

citizens of the United States – you will need to bring evidence of your citizenship such as a birth certificate, citizenship certificate or naturalisation certificate or, if these documents do not contain your photograph, you will need to bring your drivers licence

permanent residents of the United States entering directly from the United States – you will need to bring your resident alien card.

If you are a permanent resident of the United States and you are entering Canada from another country you will need to bring your passport.

Will I need a passport if I am travelling through or returning to the United States?

Most travellers entering the United States, including US citizens, will need a passport or other travel document approved by the US Department of Homeland Security. For details on US requirements click here.
